Ultraviolet water disinfection uses UV light as a microbial-control step in a water-treatment system. Water passes through a chamber that holds a UV lamp, and the system is built to deliver a controlled UV dose to the water as it flows by.
Unlike chemical disinfection, UV treatment does not add chemicals to the water. That is one reason it is often chosen as part of a treatment system. It also means the results depend entirely on physics: the UV dose the water actually receives, which is affected by water clarity, flow rate, lamp condition and how the system was sized.

UV is not a replacement for filtration or water conditioning when other water-quality issues are present, and no UV system should be assumed to address every microorganism. Effectiveness depends on sizing, water quality, flow rate, UV dose, installation conditions and maintenance.
UV is focused on microbial disinfection and inactivation. Softeners, whole-house filtration, carbon filtration, reverse osmosis, sediment filtration, iron and sulfur treatment, PFAS treatment and water conditioners each address different water-quality concerns. The right approach depends on your water source and test results.

Water quality is local. Two properties a few miles apart can have different water depending on where the water comes from and what it travels through. UV is often one component of a larger treatment system. A common configuration moves water through sediment filtration, then carbon or conditioning, then UV, and then into the property — but the right sequence depends on the equipment and the water.
