What Is UV Water Disinfection?

Ultraviolet water disinfection uses UV light as a microbial-control step in a water-treatment system. Water passes through a chamber that holds a UV lamp, and the system is built to deliver a controlled UV dose to the water as it flows by.

Unlike chemical disinfection, UV treatment does not add chemicals to the water. That is one reason it is often chosen as part of a treatment system. It also means the results depend entirely on physics: the UV dose the water actually receives, which is affected by water clarity, flow rate, lamp condition and how the system was sized.
